Assess your skills using the ResearchComp tool

ResearchComp (The European Competence Framework for Researchers) is a tool developed by the European Commission that helps researchers assess and develop their skills in key areas. The aim is to encourage researchers to acquire the cross-cutting skills necessary to pursue an effective and successful career in all relevant sectors of society, including academia, industry, public administration and the non-profit sector. ResearchComp is therefore a tool that aims to promote the career development of researchers.

The tool is structured around seven thematic areas:

  • Managing research: this area concerns project management in the broadest sense – managing budgets, staff and deadlines; providing constructive feedback; evaluating the quality of research projects, etc.
  • Making an impact: this area concerns scientific communication, both written and oral (including popularisation).
  • Self-management: this area concerns the development of a professional project.
  • Cognitive skills: this area concerns the development of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis.
  • Working with others: this area concerns interpersonal relationships, well-being and teamwork.
  • Managing research tools: this area concerns the management of research data (Fair and Open), as well as intellectual property and citizen science.
  • Conducting research: this area relates to the need to conduct high-quality research, which includes compliance with the principles of scientific integrity and ethics.

Each axis encompasses several sub-skills, which are developed in more detail using learning outcomes for each level of proficiency. In total, ResearchComp lists 39 key skills and allows users to identify their level of proficiency in each of the seven subject areas.

The European Commission recently launched the ResearchComp Self-Assessment Tool. This online self-assessment tool takes the form of a multiple-choice questionnaire structured around the seven ResearchComp competence areas. Once you have completed each area, the results will provide you with information about your strengths and areas for improvement.

It is therefore a comprehensive and easy-to-use tool for assessing your skills!
