Training and career development

Discover our range of training courses!

Below you will find the inter-university catalogue of cross-disciplinary training courses for researchers at universities in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. These are courses that are either organised internally within universities and opened up to others, or set up and/or funded jointly by the five universities.

In order to best guide you in your training choices, this catalogue is structured around seven thematic areas, based on the European reference tool Research Comp. These thematic areas are explained below:

  • Managing research: this area concerns project management in the broadest sense – managing budgets, staff and deadlines; providing constructive feedback; evaluating the quality of research projects, etc.
  • Making an impact: this area concerns scientific communication, both written and oral (including popularisation).
  • Self-management: this area concerns the development of a professional project.
  • Cognitive skills: this area concerns the development of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis.
  • Working with others: this area concerns interpersonal relationships, well-being and teamwork.
  • Managing research tools: this area concerns the management of research data (Fair and Open), as well as intellectual property and citizen science.
  • Doing research: this area relates to the need to conduct high-quality research, which includes compliance with the principles of scientific integrity and ethics.

A scale of levels corresponding to the different stages of a researcher’s career (R1 – R4) is also used to quickly identify the training courses that match your profile.

R1 – First Stage Researcher (PhD student or PhD candidate)

R2 – Recognised Researcher  (young doctor or postdoc who is not fully independent)

R3 – Established Researcher (independent researcher/early-career academic, project leader, scientific coordinator of a project)

R4 – Leading Researcher (leading researcher in his field)

These courses vary in format and duration (from 1.5 hours to several days) and can be credited towards doctoral training – a certificate can be issued to PhD students.

These training courses are free for researchers. However, they do incur costs for the organisers. It is therefore essential to register and notify us if you are unable to attend, as places are limited. Please register using the online form or the contact email address provided on each training course page. Then make a note of the date in your diary!

If for any reason you are unable to attend a training course, please notify the trainer by email or, if you do not know who the trainer is, send an email to william.riguelle@unamur.be no later than 48 hours before the training course. This will allow us to offer your place to another researcher. Unexcused absences will result in the invalidation of future registrations.
