How can one learn about scientific integrity ?

An inter-university initiative to strengthen the culture of responsible research

The Mind The GAP training course is an interactive tool developed by VLIR (Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad) in collaboration with the Scientific Integrity Advisers of the five Flemish universities: Universiteit Antwerpen – UAntwerpen, Vrije Universiteit Brussel – VUB, Universiteit Hasselt – UHasselt, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven – KU Leuven and Universiteit Gent – UGent.

Target audience: Doctoral students, early-career researchers, thesis supervisors and experienced supervisors wishing to update their knowledge.

Objectives

  • Understand the fundamentals of scientific integrity
  • Identify good practices throughout the research cycle
  • Reflect on risks, grey areas and ethical dilemmas
  • Encourage individual and collective responsibility

Training content

  • Module 1: Introduction to scientific integrity
  • Module 2: Supervision and mentoring
  • Module 3: Best practices in research (design, data management, evaluation, conflicts of interest, scientific communication, etc.)
  • Module 4: Violations of scientific integrity
  • Additional modules: GDPR, institutional ethical rules
